The Council on At-Risk Youth (CARY) and the Jim Kester family are excited to announce this year’s winners of the 11th Annual Kester Memorial Scholarships. Even though this year we were not able to reward them in person we are still so proud of the hard work they have up into their education.
Mildret Del Carmen Guardiola graduated from Akins Early College High School and plans to attend the University of Texas A&M in College Station pursing her degree in Psychology.
Vum Lian graduated from Akins Early College High School and plans to attend the University of Texas in Austin pursing his degree in Electrical Engineering.
Diana Guido Perez graduated from the Ann Richards School of Young Woman Leaders and plans to attend the University of Texas in Austin while pursuing her degree in Civil Engineering.
The Kester Memorial Scholarship was created in memory of former CARY Board Member, Jim Kester. Kester had extensive experience in juvenile justice and corrections programs, as well as a high level of sensitivity to the problems, issues, and needs of at-risk youth. To date, the Kester family has awarded 33 scholarships, totaling $35,500.
Kester heartily endorsed CARY’s strategy to equip students with the skills to avoid crime and violence and stay out of the pipeline to prison. For almost 21 years, CARY has helped youth promote safe schools and safe communities by providing a two-semester program with social and cognitive skills training emphasizing violence prevention in 13 schools across Central Texas.
